Reflection: This case study about gender nonconformity is a perfect example of examining an ethical issue within a classroom. Throughout the semester in PSC-220 we had a variety of case studies, most about ethical issues that may occur in the classroom. We learned how to use an ethical framework to break down each issue and determine things such as bias, different perspectives, and possible long or short-term solutions. In this particular case, I found myself stuck on a solution for Timmy, a boy who doesn't conform to gender and his struggle in the classroom. He was being bullied in class and I decided that he was most likely being bullied because of other students' lack of knowledge on the subject. I was asked to give my opinion on whether or not elementary students are too young for a lesson on gender identity, I said they were not. I think it's important to instill values in children and we can start to do that by educating them on subjects that they may be misinformed or simply uninformed about. My main takeaway from this assignment was to have an open mind and remain calm in scenarios where there's an ethical issue to solve the problem effectively.

Reflection: This case study from a PSC-220 course I'm taking this spring allowed me to apply values and ethical frameworks to identify, comprehend and examine the ethical problem that was at hand. From my understanding the issue of ethics at hand was that kids were wearing "All Lives Matter" shirts to school after protesters blocked traffic near the school, making pickup difficult. The real issue was that parents were sending their elementary-aged students to school in these controversial shirts but wouldn't allow the discussion about the protestors spreading awareness for "Black Lives Matter" at the school. A lot of this comes to the issue of educators being unable to or scared to talk about controversial current events in school. In the end, I said it would have been valuable to talk about the meaning of both ALM and BLM to educate the students. This case study allowed me to think about how to handle the scenario responsibly, prepare me for ethical issues, and having to implement values that could occur in the classroom when I begin teaching.
